For most of us there’s a layer of life that is known. I’ll get up today, get my daughter ready for school, shower, have client calls, make dinner.
And then there are layers of unknown. When will things ‘return to normal’? Where will the money come for that expense? Will this program or project be what I want/need it to be? It is right for me to sell my business right now?
It feels like the past year has given us some very heavy doses of unknown. A kind of unknown that has left us feeling ungrounded, unsafe and wondering how to move forward.
How do you move forward when everything seems so ‘un-fixed’?
How do you move forward when creating a plan seems so impossible?
Here’s what I’ve learned over the last year: you don’t need most of the things you think you need to move forward. You can actually create with and from the unknown, and create something more impressive, satisfying and successful than you would have even under ideal conditions.
For me, growing my business has felt like a continuous year-over-year experience of working in the unknown. I’m deeply committed to working with and from my soul. If you’ve done this you know that it can be a rollercoaster of ups and downs moving with the energy of life.
Living, and working, from soul is an ongoing practice of listening to subtle energies. Listening within. Following what you feel, sense and hear. And sometimes, many times, it takes you to unforeseen places.
And when you add into this the reality of raising a family, life can feel enormously unknown.
Let’s put it this way: you aren’t living by logic, efficiency, plans, and doing your way through things, when you commit to live from the power of your soul. You’ve basically stripped everything down to trust and faith.
When I first started living this way it was enormously hard. It was a constant battle within me to reconcile the mental/doing ways I’d learned with the trusting and listening to my soul. But as I learned to lean in, listen and let go, things became easier.
Now, with over 15 years of practice, I have developed a practice and a process for how to make this work within business - quite possible one of the most mentally-focused areas of life.
Since you’re reading this, I can assume you already are intuitive and have a practice of listening to your soul. You already know how living from the sensitivity of your senses and soul can be turbulent.
And if you are growing a business while remaining true to your intuition and soul, you also know that you are forging a maverick path. This is an extremely unknown, un-fixed path (not even taking into account the reality of living through this pandemic).
So then how can we create powerfully within this unknown?
The answer is remarkably simple. Lean fully into your intuition and senses. When you do you’ll begin to see the powerful order of nature and life.
When I first started this approach I could feel that this was true, but didn’t trust it, couldn’t see how it would work out and I couldn’t even see other people living and working this way.
I’ve since built all of my work from this place. Leaning into intuition. Trusting the guidance. Rolling as best as I can with the times I’m guided to do nothing, even when I just want to DO.
I’ve learned that my clients thrive when they lean into this practice. I’ve experienced that we make so much more progress than if we’d mapped out a detailed plan of action. And, I know it takes a willingness to grow within the energetic, emotional parts of ourselves for the physical, business aspects to grow.
Just living fully as an intuitive felt so much like leaving things to chance. And maybe you feel that way too. But it’s not chance. Only last summer as I was doing research for what to name my mentorship I came across a term to explain it all.
This thing we do - leaning fully into intuition and listening to soul - is not chance or randomness. It has an order that is more powerful and consistent than I’d ever given it credit for.
The word for it is stigmergy.
According to Wikipedia, stigmergy is “a form of self-organization. It produces complex, seemingly intelligent structures, without need for any planning, control, or even direct communication between the agents.”
Let me give you an example. When the wind blows tiny grains of sand across a beach you’d think this is random, chaotic movement. But it isn’t. The wind and the sand will move in an order that creates sand dunes. And sand dunes have a powerful purpose and strength to them. They are not random and chaotic. This creation is an example of stigmergy.
Let’s apply it to you and me. When you listen for and follow your intuition, it’s a bit like listening for the wind and each action you take is like placing a grain of sand. While you can’t see what you are building as you do it, you are creating something larger and more impressive than you are able to comprehend.
When you follow the urgings of your soul, you are creating something you need individually, as well as something the greater collective environment needs.
When you are guided to move through and attend to healing/clearing your feelings of fear, sadness or anger that you sense are ancestral, you are laying down the elements of a more peaceful, supported community as well as supporting yourself.
When you sit and cry because you feel sad, when you know you just need to sit and pull cards, when you hear ‘plan a love fest’ for a friend, each and every one of these actions are stigmergic - they are powerfully creating an order toward your individual desires and creating toward your desires for the world you want to live in.
Now I want you to imagine how applying stigmergy to your business could look and feel.
Could you follow your intuition, listen to your soul and take action from that place - while only using traditional business and marketing practices to support your soul guidance? Could you allow that guidance to begin laying in place all of your desires and goals for your business?
Can you allow for and feel how doing so opens the path to your work being more joyful, filled with ease, more freeing and expansively fulfilling?

Sharing: I recently joined Anayza on her Awaken As Love podcast to discuss the Soul of Business and how Being Emergent is a new quality of creation. Enjoy!
Stigmergy... I love it! And thanks to my work with you, I'm learning to trust it more and more. :)
